I am a sucker for Dollar Tree. Nearly every time I go in there to buy something else (newspaper, box of Boston Baked Beans, you name it) I am always surprised by some of the things I find there. Of course, with everything just $1.00, that store just gets me to spend a few dollars more every time..!
This week, I spotted two things I just wouldn’t have expected to find at the dollar store…
First up? 100% cotton bath mats. Sure, you can buy a bath mat anywhere, but can you buy one anywhere for one dollar? I don’t think so.
I particularly liked this deal because one of the bathrooms in our house has a round shower stall — consequently, a standard-sized bathmat doesn’t really fit in the space between the shower and the sink and toilet area. Usually, the kids throw a hand towel on the floor. But now?
Perfect! Of course, I bought a few so we can rotate them. Who knows when we’ll see these again? I even grabbed some for our other bathroom, because I liked the designs. All of the ones I saw are either solid tan or tan with silkscreened graphics like fish, seashells, butterflies or palm leaves.
So, I bought a couple more for what my kids call “the tiki bathroom” in our house too.
My second surprising Dollar Tree finds were these zip-on throw pillow covers! Again, of course, they’re only a dollar each. The throw pillows on our family room couch have seen better days, but redecorating in there is not a high priority right now — it’s the room our kids play in, watch movies in, and generally lounge around in with their friends.
These zip-on covers fit an 18″ square pillow. Dollar Tree had these in a bunch of solid colors — brown, black, burgundy, sage green and cream. For $2 was I tempted into a small cosmetic upgrade for our old couch’s pillows? You bet. In fact, I might go back and get a few more to make a “matched” set out of some other mismatched throw pillows…
Seen anything good or surprising at the dollar store lately? Feel free to share!

I found kale seeds for a quarter a pack. I’m sure they’re gone now since last year these seeds were hard to find. All hail to the kale!

My cousin recently spotted canned oysters there. These are usually nearly $3 per can. One of these cans is perfect for making oyster stew. I also buy gnocchi at Dollar Tree. And Sudoku puzzle books. They have such a great variety of items at $1! You have to pay attention to the package size, though. I have picked up dried beans there, only to realize later that they were only 12 ounces. I can get 16 ounces for around $1 elsewhere.
