It's Kosher Coca-Cola time 2010!

I'm often asked what, if anything, I'll pay full price for. Each time this year, I do a huge stock-up on one thing that's not only worth it, but has become something of an annual tradition for me -- Kosher Coca-Cola! I try to buy one bottle for each week of the year - and if I time it right, I'll be almost ready to run out around this time next year in 2011 :)

Those that know me well know of my love for classic Coke. Coke connoisseurs know that the original formula of Coca-Cola was made with cane sugar, and the flavor is unmatched with the HFCS-laden Coke of today. Most of the year, the only ways to get original-formula Coke is either to buy Mexican bottled Cokes at a grocer that carries them, or buy Canadian-bottled Coca-Cola when you're traveling north of the border.

But this time of the year, each year, is anxiously awaited by myself and Coke-iphiles all over the country, because once a year, Coca-Cola bottles Kosher Coke for Passover season... and it's made with natural sugar, not HFCS, as corn products are not kosher.

So, if you love Coke the way I do, and you want the original, delicious, BETTER Coke, look for the yellow-capped bottles designating them as Kosher that are in stores now. The labels also state "Original Formula" on them.

Or, do what I did, and ask your favorite Jewel to special-order you enough to last you until NEXT Kosher Coke season! If you DO plan to special order it, also make sure to pick it up promptly when it arrives -- not only will your store be more likely to accommodate your special orders in the future, they will also be happy not to be devoting floor space to your 64 bottles of Coke. :)

HFCS-Free Dr. Pepper this summer

To celebrate its 125th anniversary, the soda brand is going retro with its can designs -- and its sweetener.

Dr. Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" began rolling out in stores over the holiday weekend and should be available through early September.

Just be careful which retro design you get as some are still made with HFCS http://consumerist.com/2010/07/just-because-that-dr-pepper-has-the-retro...

Thanks for the heads up!

I saw Throwback Pepsi tonight in 20 oz bottles at Jewel, I wonder if the Dr. Pepper was there too. I almost bought some but $1.79 for a 20 oz bottle is crazy, though I do love the stuff!

Love it

The only plant that still cranks out real-sugar Dr. P is in Texas, so this is a treat. Thanks! :)

Got mine

$1.69 per 2-liter, not a great price but used the $1 off 3 hanger coupon found on a bottle I bought at Walgreens a few weeks back. Still available to order if interested.

we got pepsi, no coke

My Jewel (in the Joliet area) told me they could not get Kosher Coke. However, they were able to get Kosher Pepsi! I picked mine up today.

If its not too far out of

If its not too far out of your way the Jewel on 135th & 59 will special order them for you. I've done it twice recently. The one in Shorewood told me the same thing though, that they couldn't get Coke but could get Pepsi. Very strange

Caputo's Naperville (on 111th and 59)

Hi folks -
I was at Caputo's last night and the Kosher Coke's are in the front lobby - seemed to have a large stash - and it was .99c
happy shopping.

Mexico Coca Cola

Picked up a couple of glass bottles at the local Mexican market today and was surprised to see on the label that sugar isn't a guarantee. Now it states-

High Fructose Corn Syrup and/Or Sugar
Product of Mexico

BUT, noticed one Jewel carries the glass product of Mexico little bottles as a normal item with shelf tag near the energy drinks and they only listed sugar.

sale question

will they still be on shelves next week? (the 18th - the 24th) or is this the only week to get it?

Coke coupons at Walgreens

I was in Walgreens the other day and saw they had a bunch of $1/3 Coke 2-L (and/or some other Coke products) hang-tag coupons. I don't usually like to take them off bottle necks but they actually had a big stack in a pile on the shelf so I grabbed a few. Now I know what to spend them on :) Keep your eyes peeled!

Order assistance please

Is this the correct one?

My Jewel had two yellow capped Coke 2-Liters and both had sucrose as the sweetener, noticed there was diet Coke with yellow cap as well but didn't check what the deal with it was.

I'm sure I've seen the non-HFCS glass bottles of Coke and other soft drinks list it clearly as CANE SUGAR. Store management wasn't sure.

UPC on my bottle is 04963901. It says original formula. Thanks :)

It is

If it says "original formula" and has sucrose as the sweetener, you've got it. (Sucrose is the chemical name for sugar.)

The yellow-capped Diet still has artificial sweetener, but it's carbonated in a different way that's not dependent on corn - hence, kosher-for-Passover.

The glass bottles do usually have a label stating "Cane sugar / sucrose" -- but again, sucrose is sugar. All good :)

Excellent

Heading back to Jewel to pickup more. Any idea of availability dates for this each year or how much longer this will be available in 2-liters this round?

Thanks Jill. :)

Full-sugar coke

Jill, would you care to share with us how you stay so slim and still drink full-sugar coke every week? :D

Black Belt

Couponing is not the only art I have a black belt in ;)

Just picked up my 24 bottles

Just picked up my 24 bottles from Jewel yesterday from having placed a special order. LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! Instead of a wine cellar, I'm going to need to build a Coke cellar, LOL! Just FYI it was 1.98/2L for those that wanted a price idea.

where do you find kosher coke

I am so excited about Coke with actual sugar! Do you find this at your local Jewel? Do they come out right at Passover or any time now? I was at Dominick's today and did not see any.

Not sure about Dominick's

I don't know if Dominick's carries it. Jewels that feature a large Kosher-for-Passover section of products will have it - the caps on the bottles are yellow. If your Jewel does not carry it, you can special-order it at the service counter. The store will have to place their order with their Coca-Cola rep and it will arrive a few days later. My store put my order in on 3/8 and it was here yesterday, the 11th.

Sugar is on

I noticed Jewel carrying sugar Mt Dew and Pepsi several months back and will look for the Coke. We've been buying it in the glass bottles at the nearby Mexican market.

One thing to look for and it's available year round at Jewel is in the ehtnic section where you find Mexican food and soda is many of the 2-liters like Jarritos there are sugar, not HFCS.

Coke Retiree

A dear friend worked for Coke for decades so I shared this with her. She didn't know about Kosher coke but did remember that a Rabi came to their production center to bless the Coke "at about Passover."

Kosher Coke from last year - Still OK?

you said - "order you enough to last you until NEXT Kosher Coke season!"

I got a lot last year and I still have some but it shows it's past it's date - 08/09. Jill since you got a bunch last year - do you still have any? If so,what's your dates and what do you think about drinking them past the dates. If so, howlong past do you think they are still good to drink? THANKS

Oh yes

Yes, last year's batch did outdate around August '09. It's still fine to drink (in fact, I drank my last bottle from last year... last week! :)

The site StillTasty.com is a great reference for finding out how long things are good/safe to eat or drink -- it's based on USDA guidelines for freshness and safety. With pop, the date is actually a "best by" date -- but as long as the Coke's still sealed and kept away from extreme heat, it's fine.

Kosher . . .

Hi Jill. I love you website and all that you do. I have been following for about 6 months.

I just wanted to tell you a small correction on your comments . . .

Corn is Kosher, but it is not Kosher for Passover. People who keep Kosher can eat corn all year, except during the week of Passover. That is why Coke releases the special Kosher for Passover Coke only once a year.

I know it seems like a small distinction, but as someone who grew up with this and practices this, I just like to make sure people have the right information.

Kosher vs. Kosher for Passover

I appreciate your comments and in no way meant any offense to anyone - I do know the difference too between the two (my husband's family is Jewish.) I have come to call it "Kosher Coke" as that's what the news media and numerous other websites call it too - see Google, et al. But yes, technically, it IS Kosher for Passover Coke.

I recently discovered that

I recently discovered that even Diet Coke has a special Kosher for Passover version. Seems that the bubbles in most carbonated beverages are normally produced by a process that uses corn, so it's done some other way for the K4P products.

We're about to make our annual run the the Buffalo Grove Jewel to stock up on K4P products. I'm still waiting for the Manischewitz Cat deal to run. Any one know when it will start this year?

This is awesome!

The only thing that would make it better would be if they sold it in glass bottles! Nothing tastes better than an original Coke out of a glass bottle! Mmmm, takes me back to my childhood...

I am a Coca Cola

I am a Coca Cola addict...that picture makes me smile! I bet buying the 2 ltrs are cheaper than what I pay for the Mexican Coke @ Costco!

EXACTLY.

I love the glass-bottled Mexican Cokes too, but the 2-liters are cheaper. I paid $1.69 each (not a "great" price, but again - cheaper than singles.)

curious

how much do the liter bottles go for?
