We are in the market for new appliances (washer, dryer, fridge) and we wondering where you savvy shoppers find great deals. We've used Grant's in the past and were happy with them, but I've also heard mixed reviews.
Please help!!!

Be careful at the outlets. We have been looking for the best deal on Washer/Dryer for a month. The outlet was priced more than the store and the washer was damaged.

Now we found an awesome deal on a discontinued Whirpool Duet 9400 dryer Original $1099 got it for $449 front loader the only thing is it's bisque/not white and they do not have the washer to match. If you don't care about color (or if no one will see your washer/dryer)this is a steal....give the Tinley Park Plass a call and see if they have anymore in stock.

We a still looking for a deal on a front load washer. The sears papaer had a pair of kenmores in the ad that starts today for about $1000.00.

Good Luck

$225 for new fridge

Not sure where you are located or how you may feel about thrift stores...but I was in my local Salvation Army the other day and they had a brand new side by side black in color..perfect working condition and never used for $225...If you would like more info please send me your email. I have purchased a 2nd fridge for my garage and a stand up freezer from there and have never had any problems with either one

Looking For Best Front Load Washer/ Dryer Deals, Too

Hi Super Couponers,

My 12 yr washer died last week. Thus, we're in the market for a new washer/ dryer set. My dear hubby wants a front-load set to save water. We visited Fox Valley Sears and the Darien Sears Outlet; experienced major sticker shock. Do you recommend any of the washer/ dryer sets with steam? Many thanks for your help and feedback. Fondly, Smiles2u

Stampinmom - You might want to what for the Sears sale Aug. 16th

I was at Sears last night looking at fridges (the outlet only has a reconditioned fridge that will work for us and we are nervous about that). The guy there suggested waiting until Aug. 16th for the Friends and Family deal. I beleive he told me that Kenmore appliances will be 20% off and if you shop between 6 and 9pm for the Friends and Family deal, you get an extra 10% off. I suggest you ask about that deal if you can hold out that long.

30 day price gaurantee

I forgot to mention that the guy last night also mentioned that if the price on the appliance goes lower in the 30 days after your purchase, they will make a price adjustment. So maybe you could buy now and then get the price adjustement on Aug. 16th.
We found a fridge that had a huge mark-down on-line just to find it about $900 higher in the show room. There must have been an error on-line. They agreed to honor that price even thou the fridge is currently out of stock. They will give us that price when it is available plus the extra 10% sale that is going on now. You gotta love that kind of customer service!!

Wow

Oh wow! That sounds like a steal! We need a fridge too and that's why we are trying to not spend too much on the washer/dryer so that we can get that sooner. :-) $900 and 10% off is GREAT! Good job and again, thanks for the advise. I think I will do that - get the washer this weekend and then use the price adjustment on the 16th - that is a great tip to know.

Huge Thank You!

I have to say a HUGE thank you to all of you about this post! I have been nursing my washing machine along for a couple of years and we knew it was almost time so I've been on the look out for a good sale. When I got the paper yesterday, Sears is having a big sale starting Sat. for 15% off and an additional 5% off if you use your Sears card and no payments, no interest for 12 months. I thought, ok this might be the time. So we went looking to see what we set we would be able to get. The ones I wanted (Kenmore Oasis) were over $1000 each so that was out the window - even with the sale it was too much (around $1700) for our budget right now since I don't work in the summer. Well, we decided we would get the nicer of the next step down (Kenmore 800) and that would be around $1050 on Sat. for both. Well, we went to the Sears Outlet (because I read about it on here!) and guess what? They had the Oasis ones there and they were having a huge sale of 50% off any dryer over $599 regular price so I ended up getting the dryer I really wanted for $514!! Thanks so much Jill! The washer was 30% off but they only had 2 and they were pretty banged up so we are going to get that at the store on Sat. It will cost us around $100 more but with the savings on the dryer - we will get the set I wanted for around $250 more than the set I was willing to settle for. I am going to look on the website first on Friday to be sure they didn't get another Oasis washer in that would be a better deal. The sales lady that helped us said they get their trucks on Tues. and Thurs. This site is the best and I just wanted to say thank you to all who take the time to post all of this information here! It is great!

Thanks!

That is so cool you can look things up on-line. Thanks!!! Elgin is the closest to us - not terribly far but a 45 minute drive is a lot if they don't have anything that will work. I will check stock online. Thanks again!

Do they have refrideragtors too?

Does the Sears outlet have refridgerators too? If so, do you think they would mind if I call with the demensions I need and ask what they have that would work? It is a long drive for us so it would be nice to know if they had anything.

Yes

They do have refrigerators -- they have everything, in fact, including lawn tractors and flat-screen TVs. There are other Sears Outlet locations too (help me out here guys...) I think there's one up north someplace. Let me see if I can find out where the others are -- perhaps there's an outlet closer to you.

Edit: Google says there are Sears Outlets in Melrose Park, McHenry, Crestview, Darien, Bridgeview and Round Lake Beach too, along with Elgin.

SEARS OUTLET STORES

I have a much easier idea ,You can check out all the inventory of the oultets stores by doing it on line. And best of all the locations and sale prices. And what type of damage it may have . Forgot my daughter track down a range about 6 months ago . She would check every morning ,Because new merchandise comes in every day .No sense driving all over!!

Appliances

For a few years I followed the demolition sales (I used Murco) and was amazed by the extremely high-end appliances available. They were, for the most part, only a couple of years old. Everytime a homeowner either remodeled or listed the home for sale, everything was replaced. The only brand I remember is Sub-Zero, but one of those for a few hundred bucks stays in my mind! If you have immediate access to a truck, cash and the ability to wait you can save a fortune and definitely impress your friends and relatives with your lifestyles of the rich and famous (instead of lifestyles of the unknown destitutes!). Check it out, it's fun and you can get anything at these sales. (Google Murco, the woman's name is Jodi and she puts in some Really horrible puns)

Yes if you have some strong helpers and a truck ,You can really get top of line at a lesser price . Love bargains on anything . Also try Craigslist ,With the economy the way it it people are selling and sizing down on everything . Sears for the last year has been very poor sales on their app. And very unprofessional sales people . Wouldn't waste time looking . Nothing like it use to be NO BARGAINS! I Would go from store to store with list of what everything I need with models and their numbers ,And compare their prices . Then you will see who has the best deal. Also heard alot about Grants several years ago. Good luck

Abt - worth the trip

There's only one store in the Chicago area to go to for appliances: Abt in Glenview. We got our washer & dryer from them when first married, then our entire kitchen when we built our house. They've moved twice since then, and their latest store in Glenview is a sight to see. It's the size of SEVEN football fields.

The main showroom is what you'd expect, with rows of washers, dryers, stoves, fridges, TVs and electronics. The camcorder department has a huge salt water fish tank for you to test the camcorders.

Last summer when we needed a new BBQ grill we traveled almost 40 miles there, and got a great deal on a stainless steel Weber, then got more off when it was out of stock, then got a free upgrade to the next model when it ended up discontinued.

But in back is this huge showcase with all the high end brands. Even if you're not in that market (we were 20 years ago) wander and see what Wolf, SubZero, Viking, Dacor, et al have to offer. There's even a 100+" TV screen. And their demo kitchen always has fresh baked cookies on the weekend.

Oh, yea, free delivery anywhere in the Chicago metro area (including Milwaukee, Rockford, NW Indiana, and even the SW tip of Michigan), whether you shop in person or on their web site.

Sorry JR

Sorry JR, but we found ABT to be over priced and over-rated. IMO We were looking for deep deep discounts and service we could trust. I have heard many great things about ABT's service department, some family members have purchased items there, and have been more than satisfied. It is a fun place to spend a rainy afternoon, but personally, I wouldn't go there expecting a great deal for everyday appliances. Perhaps someone else would have better luck, but it didn't work out for us. We would have spent a lot more money. Sounds like you did luck out on the grill though.

Abt does price match

I have also found Abt prices to be higher. However, Abt does price match to both stores and on-line prices. :) If you see something you like at another store, call Abt customer service and they will match the price.

Appliances

When we were building our house we needed all new everything. Of course we wanted stainless steel too, which we thought was probably too much for our budget. Turns out we were wrong!

Sear stores have a small section in the back corner of the appliance center where they keep their returns, special orders that were the wrong size, floor models and their discontinued items. You may need to ask your salesman if they have any of these items in the store. It took us three months to find everything we needed, but well worth the wait. If your appliances aren't broken, then I would try doing this.

We got a $2250 GE Profile double oven that was returned because the purchaser mis-measured their opening - we paid $499 still in the box unopened.

We got a $1500 Jen-Air gas cooktop for $399 (floor model)

We got a $1200 GE Profile dishwasher for $375 (floor model)

We got a Kenmore wide by side fridge freezer - (these are HUGE - total of 64" across) retail $2700 for $1800 and had to build the kitchen around these.

Had to pay retail for the GE convection/microwave though. Was disappointed about that.

Sears also has many outlet appliance stores. I don't know where you live, but there is one in Elgin. This is their scratch and dent store. Here's what you do - buy the scratch & dent appliance at a deep discount, and purchase a 1 year extended warrantee. The Sears extended warrantee covers cosmetic damage, so once you have the appliance home, (these are cash and carry stores), call the Sears repair center and have them come replace the damaged exterior pieces. I learned this from a Sears employee.

Ditto Sears outlet

Ditto everything said about Sears Outlet. We swear by them. We've paid less than half the retail prices for every appliance we put in our house. :)

Sears Outlet - Love it!

When I think of appliance, that's where I go...
I do always price shop everything, but they almost 99.5% of the time have the lowest price on the item I want.
You have to remember they get new merchandise in every week.
Tell them what you are looking for & sometimes in the back they have it as it wasn't placed on the floor yet.
I just bought a french door-trio fridge by Kenmore. Went there as I'd happily take a scratch n dent piece with warranty.
So the one I picked had some minor scratches on the sides which doesn't matter as my fridge get's put into a wall.
so I paid $800 or so for a $2500 fridge...
anytime....
and well they actually messed up on my delivery and I was able to get a brand new scratch free unit for the same cost.
it was all about timing....

Just went last night

We decided to replace our 15+ year old washer and dryer this week, and I can tell you they have a very nice selection of washers and dryers at the Elgin outlet right now. All high-capacity dryers are 50% off the listed already-reduced prices - we got a Kenmore high efficiency $1100+ dryer for just over $500 last night. HE Washers are 30% off - ours was $700-something, retail was also over $1100. Both have extremely minor cosmetic scratches on them (rubs, really) - both are brand new floor models with full warranties. As soon as we were home, I looked online and found both models, new, selling for what the outlet's retail was listed at - over $1100 each.

(We could have saved even more if we wanted to - they had another dryer identical to ours, but the glass window in front was -really- scratched up. However, it was selling for $399! I was tempted. But in the end we went for the cosmetically-better one. Still, I can live with about a $1000 savings over what this would have cost us at the "regular" Sears! :) Again, LOVE the Sears Outlet :)

Here it is

I think this is "your" dryer. The one we picked out last night is the same as this.

Rats - this is electric. I think I posted that it was gas. I'm sorry for the confusion - that was the one thing that was tough last night. We'd find sets we liked and then the dryer that was there was the opposite of what we needed..!

I hope it's still there!

It's a white, gas Kenmore with a smoked glass front, and it was facing the front of the store. I was so tempted. But, I thought - my first pair lasted me 15 years... maybe I will "splurge" and get the other one, since I plan to have this set at least as long. There are a bunch of others in the entryways to the store (like actually IN between the double sets of doors) so look around... everywhere.

The new sets of washers/dryers sure have a ton of features too. We were giggling over what we "needed" or not, because our current washer (which has served us well) has settings for "hot, cold, warm" and "low, medium, high" water. That's it. This new one looks like it could launch a rocket ship :)

Darien too

There's also one in Darien--Cass & 75th Street. It's a Sears appliance outlet. We personally didn't have any luck there, but I know many that have.

Thanks!!

Thanks for the info, Prea! I have my heart set on stainless steel, too. I was afraid it would be too expensive. I've been using Jill's site for over a year now and have seen your name all over the place. (It's just difficult for me to post with my server.) You know how to save money! Thanks again for the advice!!!
BTW- I already have my chest freezer sitting in storage right now. I miss it and look forward to having it back soon:)

Get my fridge/freezer

Get my fridge/freezer combo and you won't need anything else except your Jewel freezer ;-) It's a full size deep freeze, 32 cuft right in my kitchen so I don't have to go to the garage or the scary basement. You do need a sizeable kitchen though so unless you're willing to do some remodeling and cabinet moving, perhaps you should stick to a regular fridge. I know that back when we were looking, the sears outlet had quite a few stainless freezer/fridge combos, I bet they had 30 or more, the regular sized ones, that their crews had scratched during delivery. I told them what I was looking for and they put my number in the computer and called me when something came in that I was looking for. They did call when they got a wide by side, but we had already purchased new ones by then. Good luck! There are many cities that have these outlet centers also so just check online to find out where they are.

You want to be careful when choosing your stainless and try to stay with the same brand. I never knew that stainless appliances had different sheens, grains, and colors to them. If you want everything to match you'll want to stay within the same manufacturer. We got lucky because the fridge/freezer had the same sheen and color as the other appliances, but the grain does go in a different direction. Totally unnoticeable since they are on a separate wall and far enough away from the other appliances.

Good luck with your search - let me know if you see a great price on a front load washer / dryer combo. Color doesn't matter since the Jewel freezer is white - anything will match and since I hate laundry, the only washer dryer that will make it more enjoyable is one that will fluff and fold on it's own. ;-)
