Free Jewel Frosted Flakes cereal on Avenu - LAST DAY (Sat. 7/18!)
Check your Avenu! Jewel cereal is .99 Thursday - Saturday and I have $1.25 off Jewel brand cereal on my Avenu. HTH
I did not even realize this deal was going on.....I guess that's what I get for not looking at the forum thoroughly. Hopefully I will catch it next time aorund.
I just added a couple more photos of cereal stashes to the story on the main page of the blog, including Prea's amazing 400+ boxes. GREAT job, everybody :)
I felt so silly taking 16 boxes, even though none were for my own family. I guess I should have ignored the funny looks and just announced "Whatever! It's for charity!!!" LOL I wish I would have saw some of you guys stuffing your cars!
Okay... it's 11pm. One more hour to shop this wonderful sale.
Is anyone still out running? Hee!
10 years ago I would have been going with friends to buy beer at 10:30 p.m. Instead, I'm calling my coupon buddy to go track down boxes of cereal. We managed to fill my trunk with 60 more boxes. Funny how Saturday nights are now spent finding last minute deals and preparing coups for the next days sales. Thanks a million for opening my eyes to the wonderful world of coupons!!!
I'm on the phone now checking to see if a Jewel within a 30 minute drive has any left on the shelves. We'll see if it's a late night run or not.
Dundee, Crystal Lake, both Algonquin stores, both Schaumburg stores, Elgin and Hoffman Estates are completely out now. Oh yeah, they're in my car and my living room. ;-) Called Cary and Crystal Lake, just a short drive from here, and they're out now too. Looks like, at least for me, I'm done! Whew!
I don't know which is more wiped out, me or the western suburbs. Made more calls and located another stash in Bolingbrook, so forced irate husband into car and "stole" another 83 boxes! Cashier couldn't believe it. First he thought we were stocking up for the year, then couldn't understand why we would bother giving anything to a food pantry when we could keep it ourselves! The cs mgr was there and she said "It's to help other people." I hit him on the top of the head with a box of cereal, but it's OK, the box got only a little dented. Young kid, he'll learn.
Unless you have a big family (and only want to eat Frosted Flakes for the next nine months) it's highly unlikely that one family could go through 83 boxes. :) Perhaps your cashier was tempted though!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who went out and stocked up for our local pantries... and realize that each of you that donates is now forever going to be known as "that cereal lady/guy" to your pantry staff for months to come. Heck, my pantry STILL talks about all the Pillsbury Grands biscuits I took over there, and that was months ago. :)
Great work, everyone. I feel semi wiped out by this sale too. All this running is WORK! :) But it's awfully fun too.
This cereal thread is FANTASTIC, and I'm cheering all of you while reading it, hoping and hoping that the pantry around the corner from me got some of that cereal. I'm only reading it because I hurt my back and am only walking slowly and barely, but realize that God knows that. I DIDN'T have that cereal in my Avenu even though I've checked every day. Thank you all for taking pictures and writing about it.
Just out of curiosity, where's "your" pantry?
... for a place to donate the cereal, I am the food pantry coordinator for a Community Care Clinic to be held on August 22 on the northside of Chicago. It really killed me that I didn't have this on my Avenu, nor on any of my moms' group friends, or anyone on the Community Care Clinic team! The CCC is a 1 day event where people will be coming to my church for free medical and dental appts, hearing and vision screenings, a food pantry, clothing closet, and a free meal, plus some other things.
I even had the church make an announcement today that I will take anyone's coupon inserts, with the hope of snagging some great deals in the next few weeks to stock up the pantry!
You all are amazing.
though it's not on mine! Awesome! You guys really went out of your way to make a great donation! This sale was amazing!!! It's hard to believe it actually works like that!
I was there today picking up 146 boxes - did not clean them out either and it is on my Avenu until Tues. The sale goes through Weds night, yes? I hope so, I special ordered another 100 boxes!
Cancel the order if you can - it ends TODAY and your store will be stuck with that cereal... which won't be fun for them, or you. I know my manager has asked us not to special order anything we will not take 100% of, because the store is stuck using its storage space on something it can't move/sell very quickly once the sale ends.
Rats - I was going to take them all. I'll call right now. Thanks for the info :-( I have to learn to read the tags!
Update - just talked to the grocery manager at the Algonquin Randall road store - he had not yet ordered - Thank goodness! I think I would have bought it anyway, just because I would feel bad with them getting stuck with all that cereal! Whew that was close! Good thing I never walk past the computer without checking for updates!
Prea, don't feel bad. It's the last day of the sale - go back and clear them out. While I don't advocate being a shelf-clearer, on the last day of the sale with 8 hours left, if people haven't gotten what they want by now, after three days ... it's open season. GO for it. You're going to donate it! No better reason than that. :)
Case in point - I started buying cereal in Huntley on Thursday - I bought some boxes and left some there -- noticed that the box in front was really banged up. I went back 24 hours later and the same cereal was still there, with the banged-up box in front. If nobody else wants it 24 hours later... I figured it's pretty safe to buy. :)
And hey, I hit every Jewel on my way home from class today and came home with 27 more boxes in my car. The pantries really, really can use it right now.
Consider them cleared out then. I'll have to take DH's van though. Mine hardly had room for the kids when I got finished with the Algonquin store. There's 4 Jewels right here in my area so if you want cereal, better get there before me ;-) A new pantry has opened in Huntley at Faith Community Church so I'm thinking maybe 100 boxes for each pantry?
(Noting that Prea has now been absent for the boards for over 3 hours..!)
She must be on one heck of a cereal run :)
Yes - I was gone for three hours. Do you think 125 boxes per hour is excessive? Yes I did - I got 396 boxes!!!! All for the pantry. It's going to take 2 car trips on 2 separate days, and I just hope a lot of kids like frosted flakes. I wish there would have been some variety, but cereal is cereal.
Thanks Jill for giving me permission to clean out 5 Jewels! Happy coupon dance, and I didn't even have any coupons!
If you need a hand, I've got a mini van that would probably hold them all.
That's very nice of you JR - thank you for the offer.
The food pantry is literally right around the corner from my sitter and within 1/2 mile of my work. I'm taking a load to my sitter on Monday with the kids and then on Tues she's heading over there with me. Thanks again for the offer but I've already worked it out. :-)
Incredible. You put my "paltry" 63 boxes to shame!
And hey, the way I look at it -- this sale was one of those once-in-a-year things -- we haven't seen one like this since last May when the GM cereals were $1 on Ave and $1 in the store. If it's 9pm at night and people haven't gotten cereal... why let it sit there when it could be headed to a pantry :) You did great work tonight.
And don't worry about the variety. The pantries will be happy to have ANY kids' cereals, truly. What will likely shock you is how quickly it will fly out of there. A few weeks ago I took 14 boxes of Cheerios to our pantry, and then I stopped in two days later to drop off yogurt - and all those Cheerios were gone. In two days.
Better take a few pictures before you drop that off. You'll want to remember this run :)
Great work!!!
What did you use for filler? That's almost $100 MM. Good for you!!
It makes me want to go out a get a few boxes too. ; )
It was a penny a box MM for me. It was on my avenu for $1 off. Wish it would have been the $1.25 offer, I could have bought a lot of chicken for the pantry too. :-( Always wanting to give more, it's never enough for me. I do try to get my car as full as I can every Thursday morning, but this week it will be Tues and Thurs and I couldn't be more thrilled!
Have my son's entire Toyota corolla filled with boxes of cereal! That'll teach him to sleep so late. Also my husband's Vibe hatchback area is full. I thought I was doing great at a couple of hundred, but you guys put me to shame! I blame the Naperville/Lisle/Downers Grove/Wheaton Jewels for not having more cases! After the couponing locusts hit, the stores look like communist grocery stores.
I want to see cars full of cereal :) Take photos!
And listen, you guys who are in the hundreds of boxes are simply amazing, but ANYONE who donates even one extra box of cereal to their pantry is a hero in my book. EVERY SINGLE donation does help. Every box is about a week's worth of breakfasts for someone.
This has just been a week for... delightful excess :)
Don't feel bad if you aren't able to donate as much as you'd like - if you need the cereal for yourself, you should keep it. I'm pretty sure most everyone who's buying some has likely kept what they can use. And it all really depends how much the store has in stock too. Some stores have had entire endcaps devoted to this sale - others have the regular shelf space which holds 10-12 boxes. Like any great deal, it's a little luck, a little chasing... and a little overage too :)
Each and every box counts no matter how many or how few. One box, that's a lot of breakfast for a child who is hungry. I merely got lucky today that the Jewels I visited still had boxes in their back rooms. It's all about the hungry kids - not the chase or wanting to get more than anyone else. My kids were so excited when they went with me on our first run this morning and saw it was costing us nothing, it was well worth all the time it took.
I do want to tell you I found little 50 cent boxes of Shredded Wheat to use as fillers for the overage. Guess what was on the back? $1 off coupons for Kellogs cereals. Hmmm, are those still on sale?
;-)
Oh, indeed they are. $1.50 a box if you buy in quantities of 5, through Wednesday.
I did one cereal run and used the overage from the Frosted Flakes to pay for my Kellogg's... and I'll send in for the $10 Kellogg's rebate too. LOVE that.
Oh boy - time to buy more cereal. UGH!
Great Job everyone, I loved reading about this and seeing the pictures on the home page. This is awesome, I am just jelaous it wasn't on either one of my preferred cards to be able to take advantage of! I hope someone in the northern suburbs (Lake Villa/Antioch) was able to take advantage and get some to our pantry!
I'm amazed Algonquin even has any left. My cousin and I took 56 boxes off their hands on Thursday (28 each.) They must be restocking like mad!
I can tell you that Glen Ellyn, Lombard, Schaumburg (Roselle Rd.) and Huntley are totally out.
I just picked up 13 more boxes! This is so exciting. I'm going to go grocery shopping in ten minutes, then I'll eat to refuel and head back to Jewel again (two of them). My Jewels have been re-stocking throughout the day...
Prea, the $1 off will stay on your Avenu until tuesday, but the cereal price of $1 ends today.
I managed to find ten more boxes--that's 17 total! I can't wait to take them in. I'm leaving in a bit to see if they re-stocked.
If you get a bunch and want to email me a photo (jill@supercouponing.com) please do - I'm getting ready to post some cereal pics, including one that will simply blow you away. Earlier in the week, a pair of blog readers special-ordered more than a few cases of Frosted Flakes to take to their pantry...
We were dying to do this yesterday, and checked everyone's Avenu at work. (I just figured someone must have it!). NOPE. However there were many people with a "blank square". I remember them "removing" a popular insane deal before. I wonder???
Anyway I'm curious to know if the people who had it, still do??? Jill?
I rechecked mine this morning hoping that the sizes would have magically been corrected to include the cocoa crunchies 11.8oz box (no luck there). But the deal is STILL on my card. By the way a big THANK YOU to STAMPINMOM for posting this fabulous find. I probably would have overlooked this. You started this CRAZY MAD CEREAL RUSH.
On Thursday I went to the Homewood Jewel self check and only bought four boxes but made 26 cents overage on each. Later that same day I went to the selfcheck in the South Holland Jewel and tried to buy 20 boxes to bring down the street to their pantry. After I scanned the first box I noticed the avenu did not come off and I asked the cashier who called the manager. They were EXTREMELY helpful and told me to finish my order without the cereal and they would ring up the cereal alone on a regular register. I told them I am getting overage so I did not think this would work but the manager said not to worry she had a key to override. So sure enough when they scanned them at a regular lane the avenu came off. My reciept shows a total of $85.05 in savings and the cashier actually opened up her drawer and handed me $5.44. Now THAT is what i call a money maker. They actually GAVE ME money back (with the managers approval). Anyway, any idea why the self checkout would not ring up the avenu savings when it worked earlier in the day at another store?
The man at the pantry looked surprised and bewildered and DELIGHTED to see me come in. His exact words were 'Where did you come from?!!?' I am hoping to pick up some more today.
No clue on the self-check problem. Every order of cereal I did this week was at the self-check.
Like you said, in the past when they've had something like this happen, if you re-check (reload) your card, it will take the item off. So no, I will NOT re-check the card until I'm done shopping... I'm hoping to find a few more for the pantry today.
If you have that blank square with the Ave logo, it usually indicates something's been removed.
had to load this everyday...?
I did just check my avenue and i still have the cereal
$1 off on mine
I went today and grabbed 6 Frosted Flakes and 8 cocoa crispies. It gave me 6 discounts, so The cashier and I both thought maybe it was a 6 limit. SO... to check we took off 8 cereals and started with another transaction...Of course the easiest thing for her to do was just take off all the cocoa cereals. When we rang up the rest no avenu discount was given, confirming what I had thought that there was a 6 limit. I had her void out the second order and then went to the service desk and exchanged 3 of the CC's for the FF's without doing anything with the register, she just switched them. NOW! you guys are saying it was just the cereal itself that made it not work? No limit? UUUGGGG!!!
Wrong size Cocoa crispies. Stick with Frosted Flakes only. Definitely no limit. I have gotten emails with pics of readers' cereal stashes. Many area pantries will be getting LOTS of cereal this weekend, I predict :)
You should do a photo gallery, we could all show off our secret stashes thanks to jill !!!
jill@supercouponing.com - I would love to post your "cereal castle" pictures! :)
So far this week my food pantry has gotten 56 boxes of cereal from me. It's almost frightening how well this all works.
