Two big coupon policy changes at Dominick's - must read
If you shop at Dominick's, there are two major coupon-policy changes that took place late last week. You can no longer stack ecoupons with manufacturer coupons at Dominick's. If you try to stack an ecoupon with a manufacturer coupon on the same item, the manufacturer coupon beeps and is not accepted by the register. And, Catalinas for money off your next order with another store's logo on them are no longer accepted. Under the new policy, a Jewel Catalina for $1 off Cascade (or any specific product) will be accepted at Dominick's, but a Walgreens Register Reward for $10 off your next shopping trip will NOT be.
Clearly, disallowing the stacking of ecoupons is a disappointment, especially considering the last Dominick's coupon policy revision clearly outlined that shoppers could stack manufacturer and ecoupons together. And, obviously, it affects the way that I'll be writing Dominick's weekly deals from this point forward for you too.
A few days ago I went to the store to try things out, and indeed, if you have an ecoupon loaded for a product, a manufacturer coupon for the same products beeps and does not scan; so the policy is already in effect. As for the policy revision on Catalinas, Dominick's has long waffled on how to handle money-off-your-next-order Catalinas from other stores. Again, it's disappointing to see this change, but in deciding to no longer accept these, Dominick's has also chosen to send shoppers with manufacturer, on-your-next-order Catalinas to their biggest competitor, Jewel, where those kinds of Catalinas are readily accepted. (In the current economy, does ANY store want to deliberately be sending business to a competitor, especially over coupons that they would ultimately receive reimbursement for? Jewel will only benefit from this policy change.)
For my out-of-state readers, the no-ecoupon-stacking policy currently has only been put into effect in Hawaii and Illinois Safeway-owned stores.

Dominick's Secret Coupon Policy
The problem with Dominick's coupon policy is that there are a lot of stores that still seem to rely on their "secret" coupon policy. You never know when it will be enforced and it can throw your whole trip off. You know the one that reads:
Dominick's may or may not, happily or unhappily accept your coupons under the following conditions:
Your coupon may or may not need to be presented prior to, within 6 months of, or within 1 year of its expiration date.
Your coupon may or may not be printed from the internet
Your coupon may or may not be for 50% of an items value
Your coupon may or may not contain another retailers logo, and may or may not need to be for a specific item
Your coupon may or may not be printed backwards, upside down or in black and white ink
Your coupon may or may not be valid for items stocked days, weeks or months beyond its expiration date
Dominick's reserves the right to permit its employees to limit coupon use under the following conditions:
You did or did not eat your Wheaties this morning
The moon is or is not full
The planets are or are not aligned
Your cashier does or does not like you
Your cashier may or may not know the difference between a "purchase" and a "transaction"
Your cashier may or may not feel that you should get an item for free
Your cashier may or may not use the phrase "You People" when addressing you
Your cashier may or may not believe that the coupon's value will be deducted from their paycheck
Dominick's reserves the right to change this policy, or any portion thereof, at any time including while you are in the checkout lane or even by the time you finish reading this.
can i get....
a AMEN!!!...(:
Doms Ahead of the Curve?
Perhaps Doms was just ahead of the curve on the no stacking rule. Just read on dealseekingmom.com that Kroger has now revised their ecoupon policy to no longer allow stacking.
no RR etc.
The part about not accepting OYNO Catalinas from other stores has been in the Safeway policy for a while, but most Dominick's haven't enforced it. I did use RR at my own store yesterday with no problem.
Dominicks and catalinas
I don't understand why they won't accept the OYNO catalinas. They get reimbursed for them the same as if they were dollars off a particular product. Wouldn't they rather you come buy from them rather than, say, Walgreens? Or Jewel?
It really doesn't make sense. (At least not to me.)
I know
I know -- I was told though (and again, with Dominick's "sources," who knows what the truth actually is) that they're now going to be enforcing it.
Use them up while you can..!
Dominicks "Inservice"
A cashier at the Dominicks in Western Springs told me that the store was holding an "inservice", my words, not theirs, on how the new program would work this coming Thursday. She told me that there would be people there to show how it works and to answer questions. It'll be interesting to hear their spin on it. I like to shop at this Dominicks but I like saving money more.
No more shopping at Dominick's
No more shopping at Dominick's for me. With this new policy change, it just isn't worth it. Too bad because I was starting to shop there more often. Now I will NEVER go back. Hello JEWEL!!!!!!!!!! Now I can dump all of my expired coupons as I won't be needing them anymore.
Sad
I am really sad that they won't take RRs and Jewel cats anymore. I never used to let them expire but recently Doms was having some good sales to use them on so I didn't bother running to Jewel to use up my expiring RRs. Right now I have $14 in Wags RRs that are expired and thats a lot less than I had a few days ago, thank goodness. I went ahead and burned some up on the Scrubbing Bubbles deal just in case Doms decided to do this, guess I had a feeling it was coming.
So I guess I'll be heading to Jewel with my Wags RRs instead. The e-coupon policy change is bad too but like a lot of you have mentioned, I didn't really need or want most of that stuff, so not a big loss.
Doms, if you're reading this, you need to knock it off with the new changes. We were all pretty happy with the coupon policy you had a few weeks ago. You would be wise to get it back to that.
National Coupon Month
Funny way to celebrate.
won't be including Dom in my weekly shopping
I FINALLY took the drive last week (20 min. from my home Jewel store) to go to Dominicks and look around....I guess I won't need the new fresh values card I signed up for after all. Too bad...
What about
Will Dom's still take expired coupons?
I got both
Not sure when the actual change over is taking place, but on Saturday, 9/18, I bought the Tide stain release which was on sale. My $3.00 e coupon came off, and I was able to use a $3.00 paper coupon with no beeps. Maybe I was just lucky, but it worked okay for me.
Ok, so what happens
if you go through the self checkout, scan all your items, have them scan your coupons, and then swipe your card? Anybody try this?
They did make it simplier for me now
...but more expensive. Since e-coupons were only good at Dominicks, I can pretty much just forget updating the sites and do the old-fashion paper coupons since most of them were higher valued anyway.
The offerings on e-coupons really didn't vary much and most of the stuff I used to purchase for the food pantry since my family doesn't use these items....it's the food pantry that will suffer.
Dominicks coupon reimbursement
Jill- Was Dominicks only getting reimbursed for one coupon when both the e-coupons and a paper coupon was used for the same item? If that is the case, it does make sense that they will take one or the other only.
In regards to the catalina- This change does not make sense to me especially if they are reimbursed like any other coupon.
No
As I understand it, they were reimbursed for both -- if you used a PGEsaver ecoupon and a manufacturer coupon, P&G reimbursed them both. They had no way of knowing, when a bag of coupons went to the clearinghouse, whether or not the 50 paper coupons for Tide Stain Release were also purchased by people who used ecoupons, etc.
Wow!
I think Dominick's is going to lose a lot of business if they no longer take manufacturer coupon Catalinas from other stores.
I am probably one of the few people on this blog that actually prefers Dominick's to Jewel, but this is going to make a big difference. Today I opted to go to Jewel rather than Dominick's, just because I could use all of my Dominick's, Jewel, and Walgreens manufacturer coupon Catalinas towards my entire purchase. (This was even though the Jewel store was farther away for me and had less things I wanted on sale this week.)
Typical
The great sales lately was Dom's way of getting us back into the store, and then once again, with these changes, shooting us down again. I find this move very typical for Dom's and I'm not suprised by it, not one bit. They asked up for our opinion on how to get us back in the store and then made a coupon policy that was bascially a slap in the face to us. Why do we even keep giving Dom's the chance to keep pushing us down? We don't allow people to treat us like that, yet we will allow big business America to? Well I for one won't. Go ahead Dom's. Keep it up. Pretty soon, no one will care if you're around or not. Well, except maybe the employees.
I watched a cashier today so afraid to take coupons from a shopper, he actually had to call TWO people over to help him. Said he's been written up for coupon mis-use and he can't take that chance again - and he's been there for years. How sad.
Unbelievable (long post sorry)
Another trip to Dominick's gone horribly awry. After what happened today, I strongly recommend not taking out your coupons until after they have scanned all of your items. Once again, I made the fatal error of a. shopping at the Carpentersville Dominick's and b. having my coupons in my hand at the register.
The cashier literally freaked out the minute he saw my coupons. He said "Give me all of your coupons let me see what you have before I scan any of this" (meaning my items). I was like "really? why?" He said "because I have to see what you have and if we are going to take them". Despite knowing this is not the order in which it should be done, I (like an idiot) gave him all of my coupons. He just about had a coronary right there. "You can't use these, you have too many coupons". "Umm, pardon me? What do you mean "too many"? "Well look you have ten of this kind", "Yes and I'm buying ten of those items" "I have to call someone" Well of course because I live under a dark cloud of misfortune that "someone" is Fran. I should have abandoned the entire endeavor right then and there.
Fran starts the whole process over again, read every single coupon (there were a lot), scrutinized each and every one even the ones that were all alike! She has him start scanning as we are going over each of them. Well, he again freaks out and says "I'm not scanning her order, I'm voiding it out and YOU scan it!" I was like "Umm, what? Why would you do that?" He started YELLING at me! "I need my job! I've gotten in trouble for coupons before and I want no part of this. I'm not going to lose my job so you can use coupons!"
So off he goes down to the bagging area, refusing to keep scanning. Fran calls ANOTHER person and over comes the "merchandise manager" who starts the ENTIRE process all over again from scratch. Spreads all the coupons out and starts reading one by one by one. Meanwhile, Mr. I-want-no-part-of-this is playing armchair quarterback from the bagging area trying to dictate which coupons I can and can't use.
I planned this trip very very carefully last night. No e-coupons that I had paper coupons for etc. (The price for that is that none of my e-coupons came off and I paid full price for a few things, and my "free eggs" didn't come off either). No IP's over 50% of the item (even though I don't believe that one is in the current policy anymore).
After well over 30 minutes of this, in the end they did in fact take each and every coupon. But we had to haggle over each and every one. We debated what is and is not double couponing, why they should take the free Sobe coupons (not an IP and didn't make them free anyway), why I could use a $1/2 cans of soup when the soup was $1.25 each (she insisted I was paying .24 for the soup already because I had used three $1.00 on 1's. But I was buying 5 cans, I think I said "there are 5 cans total" at least a dozen times. That didn't get resolved until we took each can and laid the coupon on top of it to prove I wasn't using more q's than I should be. And of course, the old standby about what is a 'purchase' and what is a 'transaction'.
The other kicker was that they kept refusing my q's because "they legally can't take a coupon for more than the selling price" and argued about what I was paying. Example, Sweet Moments were on sale for 2 for $5.00, I had two $1.50 coupons. She argued to no end that I couldn't use it because I was only paying $1.49 each for them. I was astounded...we looked at the receipt FOUR TIMES, which showed them at 7.98 minus 2.98 Fresh Values Savings. I had to tell her 7.98-2.98 is 5.00, making each of them $2.50 six times. She was adamant that I was wrong about that and that made them $1.49 each.
The person behind me in line actually abandoned her order and left! (I suspect you read the blog based on what you were buying so if you are reading this I'M VERY SORRY! It was not my fault it took so long).
I'm sorry this is long I'm just so frustrated! The bottom line is that it just isn't worth it. In my opinion they came on here and read Jill's blog under the guise of figuring out what they were doing wrong, and then used what they learned to take away the few good things they had going for them.
They don't have one thing I can't buy anywhere else from stores that actually want my business.
That is why the employees are so scared!
I just could not think why employees would give such a hard time on Qs when the store got reimbursed, often they tremble seeing Qs or they just look at you with disgust. This post and another one above confirm the employees are reprimended when a Q is used "wrong" and they are afraid of losing their jobs. Well no wonder!! In this economy nobody wants to lose their jobs!
I only go to Doms when it is absolutely necessary (free items or so) but their store in Naperville is soooo empty all the time.
Wow!
Did you call Dominick's corporate office, or email this same account of what happened to them? I definitely think that you should. They should know how bad this makes them look, and how their employees are acting. Maybe even post it on their Facebook page, and ask if this is what we can expect in the future, so that we can just go ahead and avoid their store-- if coupons are not welcome, and strike terror in the hearts of their cashiers when they see them.
"In my opinion they came on
"In my opinion they came on here and read Jill's blog under the guise of figuring out what they were doing wrong, and then used what they learned to take away the few good things they had going for them."
This is exactly I was thinking too. I totally agree with you. I don't want to waste my time so I will not go there anymore.
Oh well
And I was looking forward to the re-opening of the Dominick's by me......not anymore I guess :(
Oh No Dominick's
This store is unbelievable. The checkers are tremble when they see coupons. Everything takes so much time. I will not go in anymore. Do the rule makers understand what they are doing to employees and customers? The Dominick's in north Naperville has the dairy manager bagging. Their dairy is so outdated. Beware!!
DOMINICKS NEW RULES
How are we suppose to use man. coupons instead of ecoupons? Some of my man. coupons are worth more then ecoupons ! I wish we could go back and undo all the ecoupons that were small in $ amounts . Are you saying we have to wait until ecoupon Exp. and not click on them so fast anymore . No its making it a more complacated way to play by their rules, Wish Jewel took exp. coupons and we all could just say GOOD BYE DOMINICKS
Higher value paper coupon
It seems that if you have a paper coupon of a higher value than the e-coupon, the e-coupon will be applied when the item is scanned. Then taken off when the higher value paper coupon is scanned, automatically by the register.
THIS MAKES ME SO MAD !! AFTER ALL MY CLICKS
I just hooked up with that new personal shopping w/Domincks and clicked up a storm !! Now I am scared to even buy anything in fear some small amout will come off while I am holding a bigger $$$ coupon !
BUT my daughter never has done ecoupons wonder if I can say forgot my card and give her phone # and get away with it . Heck if they want to fight dirty so can I . At least until all the ecoupons I clicked on that are lower in value Exp. What do you think??
That is how it worked for me....
If you have a paper coupon that is higher than the e coupon. The e coupon will come off and the paper coupon will be applied.
so did the cashier return your item...
...order to take off the E~Q? How could the cashier do that? Even in RE scanning your item,,the E~Q will automatically be deducted. My prior trip to Dom's,,i was told that you can NOT use the paper Q,,if there is an E~Q for that particular item. i tried it...and the E~Q was deducted,,,the P~Q would NOT scan. Dom's cannot control the E~Q. So here i am wondering how the heck some of you are really ABLE to have your P~Q applied,,,even if it IS higher in value? if i buy a box of BC Brownies,,,it's scanned and automatically the E~Q will come off (if i loaded it)...the E~Q is $1/2...and i have a P~Q for $1.50/2...there is NO way that i would be able to use that ...how are you able to get thru that?
What We are Saying...
Is that if you have an ecoupon and a manuf coupon, the register is smart enough to decide which one is the higher value and applies that one. I believe if the paper coupon is lower, it causes the beep to the cashier and if the paper coupon is higher the ecoupon just "disappears" from the register and is not used.
Exactly. It happened to me. I
Exactly. It happened to me. I had it first come off $1.50/2 ecoupon, but when i gave $2/2 paper mfr coupon, it just added the ecoupon back on.
