New "Super-Couponing Tips" weekly column & video posted

Chicagoland Savers has posted my new column for this week:

"In Search of Coupons for Fresh Food"

Visit the site and click "Coupon 411" at the top of the page to read it. The site also archives the past year's worth of columns, as well as my weekly series of one-minute video coupon tips. This week's video is "Supermarkets vs. Warehouse Clubs."

Chicagoland Savers hosts a web version of my weekly syndicated column, "Super-Couponing Tips." Now my Chicagoland audience can enjoy what over 20 million people around the country already read in their newspapers each week! You can also find printable coupons for Chicagoland restaurants, entertainment, and other destinations on the site.

ditto

I agree with you as well. For me, having 4 kids means buying 4 times as much. I have been looked at while having 40 propel bottles in my cart. But those 40 bottles last only 2 weeks when my kids each take one to school everyday. People think you're a hoarder when infact you are only trying to take care of your family.

Tribune subscriptions

I always enjoy your columns in Chicagoland Savers. For quite some time you have posted promo codes for the Chicago Tribune in your 'Deals of the Week'. I don't see that this week which leads me to believe that perhaps they aren't offering a good deal right now. Last January I attended one of your classes and I feel like you posted an excellent Trib promotion at the end of the class. Do you know if they typically offer a good deal around New Years/after the holiday rush? (One of my current trib subscriptions is about to expire and I'm wondering if I should hold off instead of renewing it.) My daughter sure enjoys the Sunday Trib she gets through that Groupon deal a few weeks back. Should have gotten 2 of those!

New codes coming soon

I do share the current codes at the end of my workshops whenever they're available. And I will have new codes for you soon as part of Deals of the Week. There hasn't been much going on with new codes for the Trib lately, but I hear that's changing... :) I would say I should know more within the next week or two. And, Christmas is an okay week to let a subscription run out anyway, as we get no coupon inserts.

Jill -

Do you know if the troops can use expired Walgreens RRs if they say manufacturer's coupon?

Thanks

That is a very good question

Honestly, I don't know the answer to that. It would be up to the commissary where the shopper was trying to redeem them - they have coupon policies just like any other store.

which one?

which newspaper was it in?

Spanish coupon

Jill How did you get that khols spanish coupon?

Kohl's flyer

It was in a Kohl's ad that came in the newspaper - the entire flyer was in Spanish.

I have a small apartment

Jill, thank you for your ideas! I have a small two bedroom house that I used to share with my mom and my son. My mom has decided to retire and move to Mexico I can use her closet as a storage area. Unfortunately, she won't let me donate her clothing but I'm going to box it up and put in the attic.

Thanks for the ideas!!!

My pleasure!

Some of the best stockpile storage solutions come right from readers' suggestions -- I remember an email from a couple that said they needed a home for their stockpile far more than they needed a linen closet. They moved the towels and sheets to shelves in their master bedroom closet and re-appropriated the linen closet for groceries!

WAGS

Alot of the walgreens in my area will clip some coupons out of the extra inserts from the papers that did not sell, and will staple them together and put them near the shelf price tag area for customers to take and use - I see this alot near me, are they setting themselves up for this whole gang-cut problem?

They could be...

... and it's tough, because Rite-Aid has come out and said they won't take gang-cut -- while lots of Walgreens do exactly what you've described. That's the first I've heard of them stapling insert coupons to the shelf, but many stores do clip and keep the extras in a box at the makeup counter.

This year, the insert distributors are really starting to crack down on what happens to those unsold inserts, as they believe they should not be distributed if they weren't sold to someone.

My Wags keeps them behind the cosmetics counter

They have a HUGE bin back there. I was buying some 'acne free' product before I ever started couponing, and I went to the regular register. The cashier told me to go to the cosmetics counter because they might have a coupon for me. Off I went, figurirng it would be a 50 cent coupon. The lady said "oh yes...just a moment" dug through her stash and found me a half off coupon that was about to expire.

Some of the local stores really take care of their customers.

Produce Coupons?

What manufactures give out produce coupons? I've been searching for them too!!! I agree, they are the "Holy Grail" of coupons!!!!

Thanks you so much Jill for your help!!

Question: No Expiration Date Coupons with Barcode

Jill -- I'm just starting out as a couponer. I can already see that I'm going to learn a lot from you! I have a question about your article on No Expiration Date coupons. Just like the person who wrote to you about this, I also have many old coupons going back to the 80s with No Expiration Date. I'm going through my coupons now and throwing away anything without a barcode. But are these old coupons that contain a barcode still usable?

If they do have a scannable barcode...

Check your store's coupon policy. Some stores' policies indeed do state that coupons must contain "a valid expiration date." At these stores, those coupons would likely not be accepted. At stores that do not have that stipulation in their policies, they would probably be accepted, because again, they WILL scan if the barcode is present.

However, I'd use them soon - those older coupons probably also have the UPC-A (older-style) barcode, which is supposed to disappear completely by the end of the year from our newer coupons. I am honestly not sure if registers will continue to read the older barcode too, or only the GS1 at that point.

perfect timing

I just found a Campbell's cookbook (2001) in my pantry with a bunch of coupons I never used. They do have a bar code, but say "no expiration date." Does anyone know which stores will take coupons with no expiration date? Between my husband and me, we typically shop at Jewel, Walgreen's, CVS, Meijer, Walt's, Strack and Van Til, Target, and Kroger. Thanks for the help.

just last year

I found a good tearpad of red gold cherry tomatoes coupons w/o an expiration date... I still have some left. They also have a barcode, but where you would normally see the words and date for expiration date, it reads "no expiration date". So I would be interested to hear this as well. I suppose Jewel would not take it, but other than that I don't know. This tearpad was located in the produce section of Dominick's, back when they still took expired coupons.

Article on Extreme Couponing

Thanks for the article on Extreme Couponing-- my mother watches too much TLC and thinks I am hoarding. I try to explain the difference between hoarding and stockpiling, but it really helps to have something in print to forward to her! Thanks for all you do, Jill.

For the last 3 weeks I have

For the last 3 weeks I have been having trouble viewing the tips of the week the video pauses all the time anyone else having this issue...any help is appreicated :)

Buffering?

It may just be your internet connection? The video wants to play faster than it loads so then it pauses and restarts after more has loaded.

If it's not that then I'm not sure . . .

thank you!

ure couponing tips are always very help! ure amazing! thanks a lot!

printing coupons on my computer

Help. I am new and trying to figure this out, but cannot print the computer coupons. Has anyone else had this happen to them. I used to be able to print, but have installed a filter on my computer. Does that interfere with printing coupons?

Printing coupons

It took me a while to figure out how to get things to work as well. I am not able to print at work, since my company locks down all downloads, and ya haveta download their special coupon program. At home, only one of our four computers allows me to print coupons, which is unfortunate but I deal. Maybe one day I can at least get my netbook going!

One thing I discovered is the one computer that does work seems to like it when I use Internet Explorer. I hate that browser, really can't stand it whatsoever, but if that's the one sacrifice I have to make to save all the money we've been doing, well then by golly that's the browser I use. Firefox is what I prefer, but it just isn't compatible for some odd reason. (Pssst! If anyone knows of another compatible browser, Chrome perhaps, please let me know! IE is so s-l-o-w and buggy!)

One thing too - when trying to print coupons, "clip" a coupon you have no intention of using to try it out. Sites like coupon.com only let you print so many, so why take the chance of losing a coupon you actually have an interest in using? For me, that would be something like diapers, since we haven't had babies in the house in a long time. ;)

and when your "test" coupon prints....

....send it on to someone that CAN use it. :) You may be able to trade it for something YOU use. Most coupons have limited "prints" as a whole (besides the limits that one particular computer has), so it could happen that someone that could really use that coupon ends up without one. Or, you could leave that coupon in the aisle by that particular item and someone shopping will find it there, waiting for them. That's when we all say a thank-you to the "Coupon Fairy". :)

Caveat: Make sure you know who's receiving it

I applaud coupon generosity :) But if it's a printable, make sure you know who you're giving it to. Unfortunately, if you trade it or leave it and someone less-than-ethical picks it up and makes photocopies of it, it's you that will be punished. CouponMom.com had a post about this awhile back from someone who printed coupons for another person. The other person evidently made photocopies of the printables, and it was the original person (who printed them) who was punished for it.

If they identify photocopies having come from your computer's IP/hardware address, they shut off your printing privileges permanently. Here is the message you'll receive:

Printing Disabled on this Computer!

We have evidence that one or more coupons printed from this computer were presented multiple times for redemption in violation of our terms. The legal terms printed on our coupons clearly state "void if altered, transferred, exchanged, sold, purchased or copied.” By transferring a coupon to another person or by redeeming the same coupon multiple times you are committing fraud, and we are revoking your coupon printing privileges effective immediately.

If we identify further evidence of fraudulent activity, we reserve the right to take additional action against the owner or user of this computer, including pursuing legal or criminal actions.

printing coupons on my computer

Help. I am new and trying to figure this out, but cannot print the computer coupons. Has anyone else had this happen to them. I used to be able to print, but have installed a filter on my computer. Does that interfere with printing coupons?

"coupon printer"

the first time you use a coupon printing website (like smartsource or coupons.com) it prompts you to download a coupon printer. After the first time you download it, you wont' need to continue downloading it every time. If you've installed a filter that is blocking that application it could be the problem. You should check that it's not blocking your printing capabilities. Hope this helps !

Newbie needs help

In the past I have always taken one day to shop for the month, this helped save money by simply not making numerous trips to the store, impulse buying and on gas. I always tried to purchase items that were on sale if possible. But now I see that with Super Couponing I will need to make several trips a month to get the best deals. I like to make my menu for the month and then go shopping then, I am done for the month, so helpful in organizing my time and planning my meals. How would you suggest this newbie begin? Should I still make my menu for the month and then watch for the sales each week accordingly? It sounds like most of those who are taking advantage of the coupons/deals eat what they have stocked up on already. But I am just starting out. Any suggestions would surely help. Thank you

change thought process

Jill's way of shopping is a totally different thought process than "normal" grocery shopping - like she says, "stick with me and you'll never shop the same way again!" Sounds like you should first change your thought process - look at sales and then plan meals, instead of planning meals and then shopping. For example - if chicken is on sale $1.49/lb, stock up on chicken. Put a couple week's worth in your freezer and leave 1 pack out for dinner for that night/week. If it's pork that's on sale this week, buy a bunch of pork. Then you have your main dish (protein) covered. Then you can follow Jill's sales and stock up on other things you need for meals like: boxed potatoes, soup, marinade packets, frozen veggies, refrigerated pillsbury rolls, etc.

Here is a few examples of what I do:
Buy a large pack of chicken breasts when on sale. Cook 3 chicken breasts for dinner that night (maybe bacon-wrapped chicken, or grilled marinated chicken, or something.) I bake the rest with only oil, salt & pepper and put in fridge. Then the next night I might make chicken pot pie or chicken noodle casserole.
My hubby loves biscuits and gravy, so one day I'll make that for breakfast. I cook ALL the sausage & biscuits in the morning, but I only use 1/2 of it for the breakfast. Then I use the rest of the sausage in a pasta for dinner. If there are rolls left I just warm up the rolls again for dinner.
When there are sales on fresh vegetables (like the 1- for 10 11th free at Meijer) I will get a bunch of, say, peppers, mushrooms, spinach, etc, and just re-use them in different ways throughout the day and throughout the week (ie omelettes for breakfast, a salad for lunch, put them in pasta for dinner). Again, you're making the most of what you have even if you only bought what was on sale.

Some weeks, if there aren't any OUTSTANDING sales and you're on a tight budget, you might just have to get creative and say, Well, what's in my freezer, cabinets, fridge, and how can I make a meal out of it? Honestly Jill's way of shopping can save you even more money because you stock up when things are SUPER cheap, and that way even if you DO have a week where you are really tight on budget or don't have money to go shopping at all, you should have enough to get you through just by cleaning out your pantry. You're not forced to go spend money on groceries, because you already have them!! :)

I've only recently learned to be more efficient with my menu planning based on the couponing sales. It sounds like you're a pretty organized lady though, so it will probably come more easily to you, once you just tweak your thinking a little bit!! :) hope this helps!

I would suggest changing your

I would suggest changing your menu planning to weekly. This way you can plan your meals around what is on sale. At least until you have your stockpile, then you can go back to planning a month at a time. If you plan your trips right, you would only need to make one trip a week. For me the closest Target and major grocery stores are in the next town about 30 minutes away. I have a Walmart in my town but I plan a weekly trip to the next town. It still makes it worth it even with the rising gas prices because I am getting my groceries for next to nothing. I hope this helps.

doh!

My column will also be on stockpiling this weekend! Of course it was filed long before I saw this. I guess with grocery prices headed up we are all thinking about our stockpiles right now.

It's okay :)

Funny thing is... I turn my columns in to my editor almost 2 months before you guys see them. I'm working on May's columns right now..!

nostalgia

So, I took your class & started following your blog almost a year ago (WOW! it went fast!) and even though the 60second tips are pretty basic things that you learn in your class, seeing you explain them on video brings back that initial excitement I had after I first started shopping with your method :) We're preparing for Baby #2, due Jan 21, and at least this time around I know where to look for diaper/wipe coupons and how to sign up for mailings. Thanks Jill!!

Thanks!

That first year of couponing indeed goes fast, doesn't it?

With the one-minute tips, many of the newspapers that syndicate my column in print were looking for a short, fast way to deliver more coupon tips via their websites -- so, I started reworking tips for these videos, and my syndicator launched the video tips almost a year ago. It's been a fun way to present some of the same class & column material in a quick and easy-to-understand format. I'm glad you like them. :)

The story from the othe side .....

I like hearing the story from the other side. I don't envy the cashiers their job! I do find it very frustrating when I go to pick up items and the shelf has been cleared, and then you see that person with 52 boxes of whatever in their cart. If we all took what we need plus a couple extra for our stockpile we could all enjoy the great savings that we get by using coupons!
Thank you, Jill, for all that you've taught me. My eighth grader never fails to tell all her friends that her mom is a coupon junkie!! Ha!

hoarding

I agree. I have a very large family, and it is frustrating to find the shelves empty and see people with tons of the same stuff in their cart. Yes, people should take enough for themselves and extra for the future, but think of others when piling up your cart.

I agree

With you Momof4 :)

Wow!!!

What a great follow up! It's nice to hear these things from the other side's perspective. It's a shame that people do what this cashier said and she is the one that gets fired for it even when she was in the right. That takes "the customer is always right" to a new level, only it's not a good one. I can admit that couponing is additcting and have found myself going to the stores almost daily to check for deals i havent been able to get. However, it uses up a lot of my time and I am learning to get rainchecks and if I miss this deal, another one like it will come along again! I always try to think of the cashier's as they have a tough job dealing with all different people and if they tell me I cant use the coupon then i dont gripe. I do ask why but always ask nicely and most are nice back and tell me why and usually they are right! I hope people take heart to this article and put themselves on the other side of the register and ask themselves how they woukd feel being the cashier.

Article

Great article Jill. So far, I haven't run into what some of your readers have with the cashiers at any of the stores. I have had more issues with the people in line more and still do feel very conspicuous when I am handing over all my coupons but am developing that thick skin!! I hope that managers at these stores read these things and take actions to minimize or eliminate this for all shoppers!

Thanks,
KC

Incredible

Truly, some of the mail I get is incredible. There are days I think I've heard the "worst" stories of bad in-store experiences you can imagine, and then I read something worse.

Awesome!!

Jill, I love your column. Keep up the great work. You're a household name in my family,

I just read your coupon Q&A

I just read your coupon Q&A on the chicagoland saver site and now I am wondering which store sells the bags of coupons! sign me up! :o)

cannot find...

i cannot find the one you mentioned "Coupon Craze", how can i find it to read it. thanks for everything.

Link at top

Click their page, then click "60 Second Savings" and scroll down to the columns - they have an archive of my past year's worth of columns there too.

Very cool.

Love the 60-second video tips!

Thanks!

Thanks -- that's something we started doing this year. My content syndicator had so many requests for a video/web component to the articles... hence, "Sixty Second Savings!"

: )

Just heard a commercial for your column at Chicagoland Savers on 101.9 (the Mix). Pretty cool! : )
Congrats!

target

the coupon issue at Target was addressed on this mornings WGN news just before 9. Target has known about this "computer glitch" since August and has done nothing. They did say you can go to customer service and be refunded the difference. Like our time isnt valuable!!!!
